Given this unique setting, it was only a matter of time before a course was created to bridge Indigenous culture and the hospitality industry.<\/p>\n<p>The concept originated within the School of Hotel and Restaurant Management (HRM) and aligns with NAU\u2019s strong commitment to Indigenous communities. Initially envisioned as a class focused on tribal gaming, the course evolved into a broader exploration of Indigenous hospitality.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"rounded-[21px] w-full alignnone wp-image-97 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/lagunacreek.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/indigenous-tourism-course-one.jpg\" alt=\"Indigenous Tourism Course\" width=\"1058\" height=\"545\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lagunacreek.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/indigenous-tourism-course-one.jpg 1058w, https:\/\/www.lagunacreek.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/indigenous-tourism-course-one-300x155.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lagunacreek.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/indigenous-tourism-course-one-1024x527.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.lagunacreek.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/indigenous-tourism-course-one-768x396.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1058px) 100vw, 1058px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>According to Precilla Comisario Cox, lead academic advisor and primary instructor, the idea grew through collaboration with Indigenous community members, hospitality industry partners, and students. \u201cHospitality is deeply rooted in Indigenous traditions\u2014whether it\u2019s caring for elders, ensuring everyone is fed, or organizing family and community gatherings,\u201d Comisario Cox explained. \u201cI wanted to learn what matters most to Indigenous peoples and shape the course so that students from any field could apply it.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"flexbox gap24\">\n<p class=\"imgminwidth\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"rounded-[21px] alignnone wp-image-95 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/lagunacreek.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/indigenous-tourism-course-two.jpg\" alt=\"Indigenous Tourism Course\" width=\"440\" height=\"387\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lagunacreek.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/indigenous-tourism-course-two.jpg 440w, https:\/\/www.lagunacreek.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/indigenous-tourism-course-two-300x264.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 440px) 100vw, 440px\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Currently, the course highlights the cultures of Native American, Native Alaskan, and Native Hawaiian communities, examining their close ties to tourism and hospitality.<\/p>\n<p>The curriculum is split into two parts: the first offers foundational knowledge of Indigenous history and culture, while the second applies that knowledge across different segments of the hospitality field.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"flexbox gap24\">\n<div>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to explore the culinary side, focusing on Indigenous-owned restaurants and the concept of food sovereignty. Guest speakers will join the class for live food demonstrations,\u201d said Comisario Cox. \u201cThen we\u2019ll move into areas like lodging, spas, tribal gaming, marketing,<\/p>\n<p>event planning, and end with parks and guided tours. While it\u2019s launching this fall with space for 35 students, there are already plans to expand access with an online version for statewide and distance learners.<\/p>\n<p>This course is truly one
